How to use a recipe

Six things every DiabetesBites recipe does for you, shown with Spiced Sweet Potato Casserole.

  1. Check the carbs before you cook

The chip on every recipe card and the green tile at the top of each recipe show the total carbohydrate in one serving. Filter recipes by carbohydrate range, meal or time on the recipes page.

  2. Set the amount you'll eat

Under Your serving, choose ½, 1, 1½ or 2 servings. Total carbohydrate, carb portions (units of 15 g), fiber and protein update for that amount. It's plain arithmetic on the recipe's values.

  3. Scale the recipe

Cooking for more or fewer people? Use the − and + next to Ingredients. Every amount changes; the nutrition per serving stays the same, because a serving is always the same size.

    • Tick ingredients off as you gather them.
    • Gram weights are shown next to household measures.

  4. Cook in cooking mode

Start cooking mode opens the recipe one step at a time, in large type, so you can read it from the counter.

    • Swipe or use Back and Next to move between steps.
    • Tap a time in a step to start a timer. Timers keep running if the page reloads.
    • On most phones the screen stays on while cooking mode is open.
    • Your place is saved: come back later and pick up at the same step.

  5. Compare servings on one plate

Every recipe shows one serving on the same 9-inch (23 cm) plate, from above, so portions are easy to compare. The pictures are AI-generated illustrations based on the serving size, not photos of a weighed portion.

  6. Check where the numbers come from

Open Where these numbers come from under the nutrition panel to see every ingredient's weight, its carbohydrate and the USDA entry it comes from. Read what each line means or how we calculate.
